5 Ways to Less Stress and More Joy This Holiday Season

Nov 04, 2025

The most wonderful time of the year…at least, that’s what we expect.

But for many women, the holidays can feel more like a marathon of expectations, endless to-do lists, and exhaustion. Between work deadlines, family gatherings, gift shopping, and trying to make everything special, it’s easy to end up depleted by the time January arrives.

It doesn’t have to be that way. With a little intention, and a lot more compassion, you can create a season that feels calm, joyful, and aligned with what matters most.

Here are five ways to stress less and enjoy more this holiday season.

  1. Start with What Matters Most

Before you fill your calendar or make another list, pause and ask: “What do I want this season to feel like?”  This one question can cause big changes.  When you’re clear on what matters most to you, you can plan from that place instead of reacting to every invitation or expectation.  Your energy and attention are your most valuable resources. Spend them on what aligns with your values, not on what drains you.

  1. Protect Your Energy

It’s tempting to sacrifice sleep, movement, or downtime to “get it all done.” But those small habits are what help you handle stress with more calm and clarity.

  • Keep a consistent bedtime.
  • Maintain your exercise routine if you have one.
  • If not, add in some walking or stretching between events.
  • Drink water before reaching for another cup of coffee or holiday treat.

Protecting your energy isn’t selfish.  It’s how you show up as your best self for the people you love.

  1. Simplify Your Schedule

Just because something’s on the calendar every year doesn’t mean it has to stay there.

Try this:
Write down everything you think you need to do, then circle the things that truly matter. Cross off the rest.

It’s also important to write down what you want to do, not just what you need to do. Add joy to your season by planning something that fills you up…things like scheduling a cozy night in to watch your holiday favorites, going to your favorite holiday musical or play, or looking at your town’s Christmas lights.

When you simplify your schedule, you create space for what you actually enjoy and for the memories that matter most.

  1. Set Realistic Expectations

Perfection is exhausting. Traditions can evolve, and that’s okay.

Maybe the tree doesn’t get decorated perfectly, or dinner is takeout one night instead of homemade. The memories that matter most come from presence, not perfection.

Give yourself permission to do things differently this year. “Good enough” can still be beautiful…and far less stressful.

  1. Review and Realign as You Go

Even with the best intentions, it’s easy to get pulled back into the rush. Take a few minutes each week to check in with yourself:

  • Am I spending my time and energy on what matters most?
  • Am I saying “yes” out of joy or obligation?
  • Do I feel aligned with the vision I set for this season?

These quick reflections help you stay grounded and make small course corrections before stress takes over. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s creating a season you enjoy.
