Building Resilience When Life Gets Messy

Why Bouncing Back Isn’t Enough...And What to Do Instead

We often think of resilience as bouncing back - getting up, shaking it off, and pushing forward.

But real resilience isn’t about snapping back into place like nothing happened.

It’s about adapting forward - learning from what shook you, making space to feel it, and moving through it with greater self-awareness.

What Resilience Is...and Isn’t

Resilience doesn’t mean being “tough enough” to power through everything life throws at you. It’s not about staying positive all the time or handling stress perfectly.

True resilience is:

  • Giving yourself permission to feel overwhelmed sometimes

  • Offering yourself compassion when things go off track

  • Rebuilding in a way that honors your needs, not just your responsibilities

It’s not about staying the same—it’s about growing stronger, wiser, and more grounded because of what you’ve been through.

My Own Journey with Stress and Resilience

It took me a long time to realize how big an effect stress had on my life.

For years, I lived with a constant undercurrent of stress—but didn’t recognize it. I just kept going.

It wasn’t until I started experiencing repeated Hashimoto’s flares that I noticed a pattern: every flare was preceded by a time of stress.

There were a few major life events that hit hard. And I’ll be honest, I didn’t handle them well. I’d push through the crisis and then play catch-up, trying to "fix" my health after the damage had been done.

Eventually, I realized that resilience isn’t about waiting for life to calm down before I take care of myself. It’s about building daily practices that help me stay steady while life is happening.

Now, when I’m going through something extra stressful, I know I need to give myself extra care and attention.

I’ve learned what helps me feel grounded:

  • Epsom salt baths
  • Walks by the water
  • Deep breathing
  • A slow stroll through the farmer's market

These aren’t luxuries—they’re lifelines. Everyone’s version looks different. What are yours?

How to Build Real Resilience

Resilience isn’t built in crisis—it’s built in the in-between moments.

Here’s what helps:

  • Self-compassion: Speak to yourself like you would a close friend

  • Flexibility: Let go of rigid expectations (especially during hard times)

  • Support systems: Ask for help, stay connected, lean on others

  • Daily regulation: Create routines that help your nervous system feel safe

It’s not about eliminating stress completely—it’s about learning how to recover in healthier ways and prevent stress from piling up in the first place.
