Living Your Life with Intention

Sep 16, 2025

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to slip into autopilot? You’re busy juggling career, family, and responsibilities, and before you know it years have passed. You look up and wonder: How did I get here?

Maybe your health feels like it’s taken a back seat. Maybe you’re stuck in a career you don’t love or realizing you’ve been putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own. For many midlife women, that’s the reality: strong and successful in so many areas of life but feeling unfulfilled or uncertain when it comes to their health and happiness.

When Life Runs on Automatic

Think about driving home after work or running errands…you suddenly arrive, barely remembering the trip. Your mind was on yesterday’s meeting or tomorrow’s to-do list.

That’s how many of us live our lives: on automatic. One day turns into five, then ten years later, you realize your priorities have shifted - and not always in the direction you wanted.

For me, self-care was the first thing to go. I focused on climbing the career ladder while raising my daughters, and I wouldn’t trade those years. But looking back, I see how rarely I paused to prioritize myself.

By the time I retired from the military, around the same time my girls graduated from college, I realized I hadn’t truly invested in my own well-being.

The Wake-Up Call

My big revelation came with my first hip replacement. Suddenly, health wasn’t optional.  It was essential. I saw firsthand that a strong body and intentional habits were the foundation of a rewarding, joyful life.

It was also when I learned the importance of accepting support (a topic from my last blog post). And I realized something else: health and purpose don’t happen by accident. They require intention, clarity, and a vision.

Why Living With Intention Matters

Living with intention isn’t about doing more. It’s about focusing on what truly matters.

When you live on purpose, you:

  • Cut through the overwhelm of conflicting health advice.
  • Make space for habits that actually energize you.
  • Feel confident in your body and choices.
  • Create a vision that’s realistic, sustainable, and joyful.

That’s how you move from surviving on autopilot to thriving with clarity and confidence.

How to Start Living Intentionally

Here are some simple, practical steps to begin:

  • Clarify your priorities and values.  What really matters to you right now?
  • Create a wellness vision.  Picture how you want to feel in your health and life.
  • Set SMART goals.  Goals that are specific, measurable, and doable.
  • Build small daily habits.  Consistency beats perfection every time.
  • Track your progress.  Celebrate wins and notice patterns.
  • Seek support and accountability.  Choose encouragement that fits your lifestyle.

These steps help you take back control, simplify your health, and build the foundation of a life you love.
